DESCRIPTION

Ten bawdy and devotional songs performed as a duo with Bonnie Banane, accompanied on the organ of the Cité de la Musique / Philharmonie de Paris. Composed and played on the organ by Joseph Schiano di Lombo, written and sung by Bonnie Banane, L’Orguasme celebrates the art of genuflection, curtain-climbing, and the petite mort—while also brushing up against darker territories: incest, selfish pleasure, and feigned ecstasy.

By turns light-hearted, explosive, mystical, burlesque, and poetic, this music (chamber music, in a sense) unites body and spirit, early music and pop. Though the recording’s minimalism is striking—no instruments beyond the organ accompany this erotic liturgy—a wide spectrum of styles unfolds: R&B (La petite mort), swing (Le cri), gospel (Simulation Blues), jazz (Le calme après l’œuvrette), medieval ballads (Ronde génitale, Au plaisir), and even a famous 16th-century popular dance known as the branle (Branle [Censored]).
